There are select cases where patients may medically require a surgical procedure for health purposes, and will subsequently benefit from improved looks. Functional plastic surgeries improve both the form and function of a feature, and are common with surgeries of the face. In certain instances, patients’ insurance companies may cover a portion of or the total cost of a procedure.
Hudson Valley Sinus Center is a health-based practice that ENT and facial plastic surgeon Dr. Ran Y. Rubinstein created to better serve his growing patient base suffering from sinus and breathing issues. In his plastics practice, the doctor is well known for his expertise in rhinoplasty. Many patients also experienced symptoms associated with the nose – like chronic sinus infections and snoring – and the doctor responded to patient health concerns by expanding his practice to treat each patient’s physical health as well as physical detractors.
In addition to performing cosmetic nose surgery, the doctor specializes in a number of other facial procedures, including blepharoplasty, at Laser & Cosmetic Surgery Specialists, PC. The eyelids can change in form over time and may affect a person’s ability to see clearly. In this case, a blepharoplasty may be functional yet will still improve facial aesthetics. Read on to learn more about these surgeries, and how they can benefit one’s facial function and look.
Functional Rhinoplasty
Inside the nose is a structure called the septum. Composed of bone and cartilage, the septum divides the nose into two nasal passages through which air is inhaled and exhaled. When the septum is asymmetric, or curved within the nose, the condition is called a deviated septum. This can, and often does, occur naturally in patients, but it may also be the result of facial trauma. Often, those with a deviated septum experience difficulty breathing through the nose and may suffer sinus infections, nosebleeds, and postnasal drip. Snoring is a common issue that also affects patients’ sleep, as well as their partners’. Functional rhinoplasty, or septoplasty is a corrective nasal surgery to realign the septum. Extra tissues causing the malformation are removed, and the remaining tissue may be surgically straightened. Septoplasty can result in a more attractive, symmetrical nose, though that is not the main objective. When requested, septoplasty and rhinoplasty can be performed in tandem to suit both a patient’s medical and aesthetic needs.
Eyelid Surgery
The eyes are expressive and draw the focus of others during conversation. Eye contact is important in human interactions, but can also cause an aging individual to be self-conscious. As the skin matures, the building blocks of the skin – collagen and elastin – decrease in production. This, combined with years of displayed emotions, leads to skin laxity. When extra skin hangs around the eyes, it can interfere with a patient’s vision.
Medically termed blepharoplasty, eyelid surgery is common in facial plastics. Eyelid surgery is a procedure that removes extra skin and fat from both the upper (upper blepharoplasty) and lower eyelids (lower blepharoplasty), and is sometimes termed the “eye lift” because the eyes appear refreshed and repositioned after healing. Many patients undergo the procedure to enjoy the aesthetic benefits of the procedure, and other patients seek vision restoration. The extra tissues can create a physical hindrance in sight, and must be treated for the safety of the patient.
